Jabal al Akhdar

Our adventure begins as we leave Muscat and head towards the picturesque Nizwa region, the cultural heartland of Oman.

Our first stop is the iconic Nizwa Fort, a seventeenth-century marvel of Omani architecture. This historic fort is renowned for its massive circular tower, one of the largest of its kind, offering panoramic views of the ancient city and surrounding landscapes.

Next, we explore the vibrant Nizwa Souq. This bustling marketplace is a treasure trove of traditional Omani goods, from khanjars (daggers) and local handicrafts to exquisite jewelry. If your visit falls on a Friday, you can experience the lively cattle auction, a unique and memorable event.

We then journey to the hauntingly beautiful ruins of Birkat Al Mauz, also known as Birkat Al Mawz or Birkat Al Mouz. Named after its once-thriving banana plantations, this abandoned village offers a glimpse into the lives of past Omani villagers. Nestled at the base of Jebel Akhdar (Green Mountains), it boasts the ancient Aflaj irrigation system, a UNESCO World Heritage site. Stroll through the serene oasis and date plantations, soaking in the history and natural beauty.

Our next leg of the journey takes us up a winding 36-kilometer road to Jebel Akhdar, standing 2,000 meters above sea level. Known as the green jewel of the Al Hajjar mountain ranges, the area is a verdant paradise with terraced fruit orchards. Here, you will see a variety of fruit trees including peaches, apricots, figs, grapes, apples, pears, plums, almonds, and walnuts. The region is especially famed for its high-quality pomegranates.

We visit the charming villages of Saiq, Wadi Bani Habib (known for its old houses), and Al Ain. These villages offer stunning vistas of dramatic peaks, gorges, and wadis. During March and April, the air is filled with the fragrant aroma of blooming roses, and you might even see villagers distilling rose water.

After a morning of exploration, we relax with a set menu lunch at a hotel in Jebel Akhdar, enjoying the local flavors and hospitality.

With hearts full of memories and cameras full of photos, we make our way back to Muscat, concluding our full-day tour of Nizwa and Jebel Akhdar.

Join us for this unforgettable journey through some of Oman’s most enchanting landscapes and historic sites!
