Turtles by Night: A Two-Day Adventure in Oman

Turtles by Night is a two-day tour package that offers the opportunity to explore the stunning coast of Oman, visit charming seaside villages, discover spectacular wadis, marvel at an awe-inspiring sinkhole, traverse dazzling desert sands, and experience a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to spot turtles at the Ras Al Jinz Sanctuary.

Itinerary:

Day 1
At 8:00 AM, we depart by 4WD for Ras Al Jinz via the scenic and rugged coastal route. This tour provides breathtaking views of the Gulf of Oman’s blue waters, complemented by pristine white beaches.

We drive past the fishing village of Quriyat, where there is a good chance of spotting flamingos and eagles at an inland stream. We visit the picturesque Wadi Arbaieen, known for its deep pools of water surrounded by date palms. Next, we proceed to the Bimah Sinkhole, a spectacular limestone crater filled with blue-green water. On clear sunny days, you might spot sharks in the deep blue waters or see gazelles sprinting across the landscape.

Arriving in Sur, we visit the traditional dhow factory. As we continue, the road winds through mountain terrain, offering breathtaking views of the ocean.

After a set menu lunch at the Hotel, we drive to Ras Al Jinz, a sanctuary for green turtles, and check into the hotel.

Dinner will be served at the hotel. In the evening, we take a short walk to the beach, escorted by trained guides, to watch the turtles coming ashore to nest. We spend the night at the Ras Al Jinz Scientific and Visitor Centre.

Day 2
At 8:00 AM, we proceed to visit Wadi Bani Khalid, which features small, picturesque villages nestled in the mountains. The wadi has clear, deep blue water, and it is advisable to wear light, comfortable clothing and walking shoes.

Next, we visit the Wahiba Sands, a vast expanse of red and white sand dunes rising up to 200 meters. These dunes are home to a variety of flora and fauna and offer ever-changing patterns, which are a photographer’s delight. Experience the thrill of a roller coaster ride as our experienced drivers take you over the dunes. The Wahiba Sands is also home to the traditional Bedouin tribe, known for their hospitality and knowledge of the desert. We will visit a Bedouin family in their traditional and simple habitat. A set menu lunch will be served at Hotel before we return to Muscat at approximately 5:30 PM.

Availability:
This tour is available year-round, although some sights may be closed during certain periods.

Special Note-
Never approach turtles emerging from the sea or disturb nesting Turtles.
Watch out for disoriented hatchlings and direct them seaward.
Never leave waste on the beach.
Avoid making noise around the nesting beach.
Using the flashlight is prohibited. The best photo opportunity would be early morning around 0530 hrs.
Carry light pullovers in dark colors only.
Carry only one small overnight bag due to the limited baggage space.
