Welcome to Bousher Dunes
If you’re looking to experience and explore the desert of Oman, the Wahiba Wilderness Tour is a must-do.
Starting with a drive from Muscat, you’ll arrive at the vast expanse of the Al Sharqiya Sands, also known as the Wahiba Sands or Ramlat al Wahiba. Here, you’ll witness the Omani desert in all its glory, with wide swaths of undulating red and white sands forming dunes that rise up to 200 meters. These ever-changing patterns are sculpted by the sweeping winds.
Despite the sparse flora and fauna, this harsh land was once home to the Bani Wahiba tribe, for whom the Wahiba Sands are named. Today, only a few Bedouin houses remain, and you’ll have the opportunity to visit one and talk to its inhabitants.
Next, we move towards Wadi Bani Khalid, also known as Wadi Hayer or Wadi Hawer, a desert paradise amidst the sweltering sands. This oasis is surrounded by date palm trees and features a network of sparkling blue pools set against intimidating rock valleys. The Wadi Bani Khalid tour reveals that this wadi is not just a single spot but a wide expanse covering numerous villages in the rocky hills. The pools boast absolutely clear, sparkling waters, and there’s even a waterfall. Some parts of the wadi contain tiny caves, which should only be explored with a guide.
After exploring the wadi, we return to Muscat.
